Stones Throw released a split 12-inch single by Cut Chemist and Madlib in 2001 containing two 8-minute tracks by each producer sampling from the compilation The Funky 16 Corners (2000). The full title of Cut’s side was “Bunky’s Pick (7 Minutes and 48 seconds of Funk),” a mega-mix of several tracks from the comp with a focus on the funky drummers. Madlib’s side was a beat tape suite sampling exclusively from Billy Wooten’s “In the Rain.”
Half of the production run featured Cut Chemist on the front with Madlib on the back, and the other half of the production flipped the two sides. Both photos by B+.
1. Cut Chemist - Bunky’s Pick
2. Madlib - 6 Variations of In the Rain
3. Billy Wooten - In the Rain
This double bill was inspired by the Cut Chemist vs Madlib "Soundclash" held at The Root Down club in Los Angeles, 2000.
